Shamrock Farms, AZ Diamondbacks’ cow milking contest benefits local food bank

Shamrock Farms, in partnership with the Arizona Diamondbacks, kicked off their “Grand Slam Milk Drive” benefiting St. Mary’s Food Bank with a cow milking contest at the Diamondbacks’ Chase Field.

Last season, the D-backs (and Levy Restaurants) donated more than six tons of stadium food from Chase Field. This season, Shamrock Farms is stepping up to the plate with a matching donation of 6,000 gallons of milk (1,000 gallons for every ton of food donated throughout the season.) This program begins our efforts around June Dairy month and reinforces our overall brand strategy of nourishing families in our community.

Arizona Diamondbacks pitchers, Archie Bradley, Andrew Chafin and J.J. Hoover all participated in the contest on May 23. Click here to watch the video on AZCentral.com.

Nearly one in four children, one in five Arizonans, and one in seven seniors in Arizona live in poverty and go to bed hungry. Arizona ranks fifth in the country for high child food-insecurity rates, with more than 400,000 children facing hunger every day. You can take part in the Grand Slam Milk Drive, just head to Shamrock Farms’ website for details.

Teacher represents school mascot ‘Superhero’

Congratulations to Mr. Frank Guerra, a 5th grade teacher at Kyrene De Los Ninos Elementary School and the recipient of the KNIX Teacher of the Week.

“He represents the school’s mascot, the ‘Superhero’ with such a modest yet shining example,” wrote the mother who nominated him.

“He helps coach intramural sports and teaches kids about team work while having fun. He uses his camera throughout the school year and takes pictures, which kids just love. He captures so many joyful moments during school-wide events for the school year book. He made a photo montage for his students at the end of the 1 semester and will give them another at the end of the 2nd. They’ll be able to see what they looked like and accomplished by the end of the school year; what a treat! This is a very thoughtful gift and many will keep these memories forever.”

“Without being required to, he stays after school to help with homework and never turns a student away who needs help. My son’s confidence, personally and academically, has increased significantly this school year. My son has really shined in all subjects, especially Math. So much is credited to Mr. Guerra because he believes and shows his students that each one can succeed. He encourages them to use their mind and imagination and will guide them through their problem-solving. With his help, they usually end up remembering how to figure it out on their own. He makes school fun and continues to have great success among his classroom. My son loves to go to school every day.”

The weekly winners are entered for a chance to become the Teacher of Year.

The KNIX 102.5 Teacher of the Week contest is sponsored by Larry H. Miller Chrysler Jeep Avondale and Dairy Council of Arizona.

Winner of Fuel Up To Play 60 Super Bowl 50 Trip announced!

Congrats to Donna Moore, P.E. teacher and Fuel Up To Play 60 Program Advisor at Payson High School, on her much deserved win of an all expense paid trip to Super Bowl 50 in San Francisco!

Donna has been a Fuel Up To Play 60 Program Advisor for seven years, earned a spot in the Fuel Up To Play 60 Hall of Fame in 2014, and has successfully implemented Fuel Up to Play 60 at that tricky high school level at Payson HS! She opened the gym during lunch hours so students could use this time to get in some activity, organized an annual school-wide wellness day, and encouraged her student team to work with the food service staff to make healthy changes to the school’s menu.

“Donna Moore has been instrumental in exciting a large group of students to take charge of their health and nutrition,” Payson High School Principal, Brian Mabb said. “Those students have formed committees to create student-led initiatives that have expanded student voice on campus as well as driving positive changes in our students’ habits regarding health and nutrition.” What “moore” can we say – you are amazing Donna!
