Chief Hill Learning Academy’s summer nutrition program got off to a tasty start thanks to this year’s Chandler Pizza Camp.
More than 50 kids came on Tuesday, June 6 to decorate a pizza box and prepare their own pizza. They also received goody bags and visits from the Diamondbacks’ mascot Baxter and organist Bobby Freeman.
This year, the Dairy Council of Arizona awarded $46,000 across 23 schools and six local districts to local summer food service programs. During the summer months, many children go without the quality balanced meals they’re provided during the school year. This federally funded program ensures students have access to free daily meals that include essential products like dairy and meet federal nutrition guidelines. Any school that participates in the Fuel Up To Play 60 program is eligible to apply for a summer nutrition grant.
Dairy Farmer Craig Caballero was on hand to present Chief Hill’s $2,000 grant to Brian Forney, kitchen manager for Chandler Unified School District and creator of the pizza camp. Also in attendance were Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas and Jesus Mendoza, regional administrator for the US Department of Agriculture.
